England kicks off the World Cup in Qatar 2022 with the same corner's routine they did in Russia 2018
After a catastrophic result for Iran, it is hard to praise anything Quieroz has done in this game. However today I will elaborate a specific and effective routine that England has been doing in corner kicks since 2018, and see if Quieroz has dealt with it properly.
Harry Kane ending position
Let’s start by breaking down England’s structure in attacking corners:
Trippier is the taker (out-swing), and 3 runners will start near the edge of the box at far post; Kane, Maguire, and Stones, meanwhile 2 players are standing at the edge of the six-yards; Sterling and Rice. I will kindly ask you to put Rice in your mind, because we will get back to what he is doing later on this piece.
Stones will towards the near post, same applies on Rice and Sterling, meanwhile Maguire will be their target at penalty spot. But our story here is all about Kane, so keep an eye in which position he will end.
Maguire’s header hit the crossbar, and Kane ended at the far post in six-yards box.
This will take us to England’s opening game against Tunisia back in Russia 2018.
England scored two goals with that exact routine 4 years ago
First corner in England’s World Cup 2018 campaign, 4 runners near the edge of the box; Kane, Stones, Maguire, and Henderson, and 2 again at the edge of six-yards; Sterling and Dele Alli (presumably doing Rice’s role). Important to note that Tunisian players are all zonal.
Stones and Henderson will run to the near post, Maguire is their target again around penalty spot, and Dele and Sterling are standing with their men away from far post. Meanwhile Kane couldn’t care less about the ball path, he is just going to the same position he wants to end in, which the far post inside the six-yards box.
Maguire hit it as usual towards Kane’s area, and it was a good first attempt in that game.
8 minutes later in the same game, repeating the same routine with a short option player added this time getting two Tunisians players out of the box. And with Tunisia adjusting their defending structure, now they have 3 man markers with the 4 usual runners.
Now we focus on Henderson’s movement by which he will take 2 of the 3 markers with him in the following 3 screenshots.
Stones will hit it this time, and Kane still will be going into the six-yards box.
Rebounded to Kane, then goal.
Here again they are doing the same routine, but with Tunisia again adjusting their defending structure by adding a fourth man marker.
However what I want to highlight here is that Dele Alli didn’t do what he had to do (same as Rice) which is going away with his marker to free this space for Kane.
Last corner in that game, same routine
Stones will block his man to avoid him from following Maguire, and Henderson ran to the near post as usual to drag his marker away from Maguire too.
So Maguire hit it easily, and Kane again ending at the same spot waiting for either a rebound or a pass from Maguire’s head. He got it and just flick it into the nets.
So did Iran kept suffering from an idea that the same exact team has been doing 4 years ago?
Unsurprisingly, Carlos Quieroz has dealt with that routine way better than Tunisia had in 2018. You will notice in the next screenshots in different corners, that Kane’s man marker will not care about the ball or anything else, he will stick to Kane wherever he goes.
Same routine, Rice and Sterling moved to near post, Kane went to far post, however this time he has a marker. And here is another corner in the second half that endorses the preparation of Quieroz for this routine.
In conclusion, I’m not praising or criticising any of both coaches, however it was worth mentioning the link between 2 different world cups and ask myself if the opposition has studied the previous routines properly, however England managed to score from a corner in that game after all.
Brilliant... i am at work now so I listened to the article but I will have to read it later.
